In Vermont, as of Friday (Feb. 17th), the sale of compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs will be prohibited. And beginning on Jan. 1st, the sale of four-foot linear fluorescent bulbs will be prohibited.

Vermont became the first state to ban the sale of fluorescent lighting with California becoming the second state.

In 2023, lawmakers are expected to introduce bills in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington banning the sale of fluorescent lights.

With flourescent lighting being banned, facility managers need to have a plan for upgrading their lighting.  The time and cost to make the change can be substantial.  However, many states have efficiency programs that provide rebates to making the switchover to LEDs.
